Oriental food never tasted this good. A classy restaurant offering authentic Vietnamese food, Dangs is at 205 Wellingborough Road and opens evenings from 5pm onwards.
England’s Home Counties may seem an unlikely place for a gorgeous Oriental meal, but times are changing. A rare find is Vietnamese cuisine. With the opening of Dangs Vietnamese Restaurant in Northampton, Midlanders can now gorge on authentic Asian food in a lovely setting. For anyone living in the English countryside, or travelling through the Midlands, Dangs Vietnamese Restaurant is certainly a welcome, sumptuous find. Dangs Vietnamese Restaurant’s Classy AmbienceDangs is the brainchild of lady owner Hao Thi Dang, who comes from a family line of Oriental catering. Helped by her brother Duc Van Dang, a chef at Dangs, Hao decided to go back to her Vietnamese roots, and open a Vietnamese restaurant instead of a Chinese one. Dangs’ outside canopy may mean taking a second look while driving on Wellingborough Road, but once inside, the ambience is suitably classy and tasteful. Dangs Vietnamese Restaurant has two levels, with customers dining at the basement level. Exotic reds and dark wooden colours beckon hungry guests into a rich, cosy atmosphere, where lacquered chopsticks and Oriental paraphernalia abound. There is a lovely Chinese medicine cupboard near the staircase if one would like another look at the menus. Unlike most plain-looking Oriental takeaways or eateries, Dangs wins out on the décor front, as the ambience is great for a romantic meal or group gathering. Vietnamese Starters at DangsThe Vietnamese food does not disappoint either. Chefs Luu Ngoc Dang and Duc Van Dang cook up a storm at ground level, while guests are greeted in by smiling waiters. Dangs’ menu, also found on their website, offers delicious starters like Seared Scallops on Baby Spinach (Tai Chi Bo Xoi) and Spicy King Prawns on Lettuce (Tom Sao Cay) at affordable prices. For something more authentic, a recommended Vietnamese starter is Nem Thinh – two fat spring rolls wrapped in transparent rice paper, served with lovely sauce. Luckily for English visitors, the menu explains what is in every dish, even how to pronounce the Vietnamese dish names! As Vietnamese love using fresh ingredients, the food served at Dangs is fresh and unpretentious. Dangs Vietnamese Main CoursesOnce the appetite is whetted, customers will be pleased by the wide range of main courses. An all-encompassing noodle dish is a good option, or one may prefer a selection of meat or vegetarian dishes to go with rice or flavoured noodles. A complete noodle dish only costs between £6.95 and £8.50. These noodle dishes, whether they be udon noodles, vermicelli or egg noodles, come with a variety of ingredients such as oyster mushrooms, king prawns, pork balls or wanton dumplings, depending on the dish. As it is the Vietnamese way to add condiments, delicious chilli sauce and fried shallots are offered as part of the dish. Vietnamese dipping sauces are well-known as they are remarkably light and sweet. Pho Bo Ga is recommended for the main course – this soup noodle dish has a naturally beefy flavor, and is one of Vietnam’s renowned dishes. Vietnamese Coffee & DessertVietnamese coffee is probably the best way to end a meal. It is thick yet goes down easily. Those with a sweet tooth may like banana crepes with ice-cream, or adventurous guests may go for the Che Tran Chau Nuo C Du’a – mung beans, tapioca and coconut milk. Beverage-wise, there is a hearty selection of wines and some beers to choose from. Dangs’ website advertises Vietnamese beers like Saigon beer, Hanoi or Hue Beer but they were not available at the time of this visit. Dangs Vietnamese Restaurant is open every evening from 5-11pm, except Fridays and Saturdays when it closes at 11.30pm. Dangs is located at 205 Wellingborough Road Northampton NN1 4ED, and to book a table ring (44) 1604 607060.
